Threads Web App Launches
After much anticipation, the web version of Threads has been released. Meta, the company behind it, had previously announced that their Twitter rival would be available on browsers, and now the rollout has begun. Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, confirmed on Thursday that the update is now accessible to all users.
This means that if you’ve been impatiently updating threads.net waiting for it to be available, you should check again. So far, many Threads users have been frustrated by the lack of an online version. While it was possible to manually navigate to a specific user’s profile, people have not been able to browse their feeds, send messages, reply or even log into their account through a browser.
Since the app’s engagement has dropped significantly since its initial release, many have cited the lack of an online version as a significant hindrance to the app. Both Mark Zuckerberg and Mosseri have promised that a web version is high on their agenda for Threads, though Mosseri recently said the team is working out some bugs in the experience.
Now that the web version is finally out, it will be interesting to see which of the many “missing” features Threads gets next. Users have also complained about the lack of content search – currently people can only search for users, not specific posts – and hashtags, both of which help people find new content on Instagram and Twitter.
One feature that seems unlikely, however, is the addition of DMs. Mosseri has said he’s reluctant to add another inbox to users’ lives, though he recently raised the possibility of incorporating Instagram posts into the Threads experience. But he confirmed that post-editing features are in the works, so at least Threads users won’t have to wait over a decade for an edit button.
